Hyper focus is a state of intense concentration on a task or activity. While individuals with ADHD may have difficulty staying focused on uninteresting tasks, they may also experience hyperfocus when engaged in activities that interest and stimulate them. This ability to intensely focus can lead to high productivity and success.
Creativity and out-of-the-box thinking are also common strengths in individuals with ADHD. These strengths can lead to unique solutions to problems and help individuals think outside the box in various situations. “Embracing these strengths can help individuals with ADHD overcome the challenges associated with the condition and success in their personal and professional lives.
Embracing ADHD as a Superpower:
I have personally experienced the benefits of hyperfocus and creativity in my life. ADHD presents many challenges, especially socially, where I feel pressured to act out of character since childhood.
Looking back at my accomplishments, I realize now ADHD is what enabled me to explore multiple interests and find success in each of them.
My passion for the internet and computers led me to teach myself coding at a very early age. It helped me land my first job at 19, despite competing against graduates and much older candidates. I still vividly remember the day of the interview. I was the youngest person in the room and the only one not wearing formal clothes, yet I still got the job.
In addition to my job, my experience with the internet and technology inspired me to open my own how-to tech blog, UltGate. It went viral repeatedly and established me as a well-known tech blogger under my pseudonym “Jed Ismael.”
This passion also led me to relocate to Germany right before the pandemic hit Lebanon. It enabled me to pursue new opportunities and build a successful career in software engineering.
Although an earlier diagnosis would have made my life easier, I can’t help but wonder if taking medication at a young age to manage my symptoms would have changed who I am. I am grateful for my superpower and to have embraced my authentic self.
